What is it?
Kyphosis is an excessive forward curve of the spine in the upper back. This may result in looking like you are hunched over. It is sometimes called a “hunchback” or “humpback”.
What are the types of kyphosis?
It may be postural from slouching or spending excessive time on a computer. The ligaments may become stretched and some muscles weak. This is usually manageable through regular exercise and stretching.
Scheuermann’s Kyphosis is a condition where the vertebrae develop into a wedge shape rather than rectangle. It affects boys more than girls and may cause pain when standing or sitting for long periods of time.
Congenital Kyphosis is a condition present at birth where the spine doesn’t develop properly. It may be accompanied by other congenital defects affecting the heart and kidneys.
What causes Kyphosis?
It may be caused by posture, bone growth abnormalities, structural abnormalities of the bone or spinal injuries.
What are the symptoms?
Many people have no symptoms other than a visible hunchback. Others experience pain and stiffness in their shoulders or between the shoulder blades. In severe cases people may have trouble taking a deep breath, balance issues, numbness in their arms or legs and neck pain.
Is surgery necessary?
In most instances surgery is not required. In severe cases where there is potential damage to the nerves, or internal organs or very severe back pain, spinal fusion surgery may be indicated.
