Frequently Asked Questions About Exercise Physiology

What does an exercise physiologist do and how is it different from a physiotherapist?

An exercise physiologist is a university-trained allied health professional who uses exercise as medicine to manage chronic conditions, injuries and disabilities. While physiotherapists focus primarily on hands-on treatment of injuries and pain, exercise physiologists specialise in designing and supervising long-term exercise programs for conditions like diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and obesity. Both disciplines work closely together at Everybody Physiotherapy.

Can an exercise physiologist help with chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease?

Yes — exercise physiology is one of the most evidence-based interventions for managing chronic conditions. Targeted exercise programs can help regulate blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, improve cardiovascular function in heart disease, increase bone density in osteoporosis, and improve strength, energy and mental health. Our exercise physiologist creates safe, progressive programs tailored to your condition and goals.

How can exercise physiology help me recover from an injury?

Once the acute phase of an injury is managed by a physiotherapist, an exercise physiologist takes over to rebuild strength, endurance and function. This is particularly important after joint replacements, muscle injuries, spinal conditions and prolonged inactivity. We design progressive programs using our onsite rehabilitation gym and hydrotherapy pool to get you back to full capacity.

Is exercise physiology covered by Medicare, private health insurance or NDIS?

Exercise physiology can be accessed through Medicare’s Chronic Disease Management plan with a GP referral. Most private health funds with extras cover also provide a rebate. NDIS participants can access exercise physiology under Capacity Building supports. WorkCover and DVA referrals are also accepted at Everybody Physiotherapy.

What happens at my first exercise physiology appointment in Penrith?

Your first session includes a detailed health history, physical assessment and goal-setting discussion. Your exercise physiologist will assess your current fitness, strength and movement, review any relevant medical history, and design a personalised exercise program. You will leave with a clear plan and an understanding of how exercise will help your specific condition.

Do I need a referral to see an exercise physiologist at Everybody Physio?

No referral is needed to book directly. However, if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate through a Chronic Disease Management plan, you will need a referral from your GP. NDIS, WorkCover and DVA clients will also need relevant documentation. Call us on (02) 4721 1222 and we can help work out the best pathway.

What is the difference between exercise physiology and personal training?

Exercise physiologists are university-qualified allied health professionals registered with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA). They are trained to work with people who have injuries, chronic conditions or disabilities — populations where standard exercise can cause harm if not carefully managed. Personal trainers work primarily with generally healthy populations. If you have a health condition, injury or disability, an exercise physiologist is the appropriate choice.

Why choose Everybody Physiotherapy for exercise physiology in Penrith?
