WOMEN’S HEALTH AND PREGNANCY PHYSIOTHERAPY

Pregnancy can be one of the most rewarding and joyful times in a woman’s life. However, it can also be one of the most uncomfortable and painful times.  Our physios can provide you with assessment and management of pain during your pregnancy, along with personal understanding and empathy.

We can prescribe personalised exercise programs to manage your conditions. If you prefer exercising in a group, you’re welcome to come and try our clinical pilates and aqua aerobics classes. In addition to exercise management, we also provide hands-on treatment such as massage and mobilisations to assist you in managing your pain. It is important to speak to your physiotherapist to see which options would be best suited to you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Women’s Health & Pregnancy Physiotherapy

What is pelvic floor physiotherapy and do I need it?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialist area of physiotherapy focused on the muscles, ligaments and connective tissue of the pelvic floor. These structures support your bladder, bowel and uterus and are affected by pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, surgery and ageing. You may benefit if you experience leaking urine when coughing or exercising, pelvic pain, heaviness or prolapse symptoms, pain during intercourse, or difficulty controlling your bladder or bowel.

Is it normal to have pelvic pain or back pain during pregnancy?

Pelvic girdle pain and lower back pain are very common during pregnancy as hormonal changes affect ligament laxity and the growing baby shifts your centre of gravity. While common, these symptoms are not something you simply have to put up with. Physiotherapy during pregnancy can provide significant relief through exercise, manual therapy, taping and supportive garments, and can help manage your symptoms all the way through to delivery.

How can a women's health physiotherapist help during and after pregnancy?

During pregnancy, a women’s health physiotherapist can treat pelvic and back pain, help you stay active safely and prepare your body for birth. After birth, physiotherapy addresses pelvic floor recovery, abdominal separation (diastasis recti), scar tissue management, and returning to the activities you love. Real-time ultrasound is used to assess pelvic floor muscle function and guide retraining.

What is prenatal and postnatal physiotherapy?

Prenatal physiotherapy supports your body during pregnancy — managing pain, optimising movement and preparing for birth. Postnatal physiotherapy focuses on recovery after delivery, addressing pelvic floor weakness, bladder control, abdominal separation and return to exercise. At Everybody Physiotherapy, four of our physiotherapists have a special interest in women’s health and pregnancy, ensuring experienced and knowledgeable care.

How soon after giving birth can I see a physiotherapist?

You can see a physiotherapist as soon as you feel ready after birth — even in the early weeks. An early postnatal assessment can check for pelvic floor damage, abdominal separation and other concerns before symptoms become established. Many women benefit from an assessment at six weeks postpartum, but earlier is absolutely fine if you have concerns.

Do you offer pelvic floor physiotherapy for menopausal and post-menopausal women?

Yes. The hormonal changes of menopause and post-menopause significantly affect pelvic floor function, often contributing to bladder leakage, prolapse, vaginal dryness and pelvic pain. Our physiotherapists understand the changes your body goes through at this stage of life and provide assessment and treatment to manage these concerns, improve function and maintain quality of life.

What happens at a pelvic floor physiotherapy appointment?

Your first session includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, history and goals. Your physiotherapist may use real-time ultrasound to assess how your pelvic floor muscles are functioning. Assessment and treatment are always performed with your comfort and consent as the priority. You will leave with a tailored program and clear guidance on what to do next.
